about

If you've ever had one of the moments when you've thought, "I wonder what happened to_________? What if I'd said something else? What if I'd not said anything? Would things have turned out different?" This is one of those kind of songs. It happened a long time ago but the memory stuck and was the inspiration for this song

lyrics

She came down to his cabin by the river
A Montana summer twilight tumbling from the sky
Reflected on the flame of amber hair
The two there on the porch in tortured small talk
Fumbling past the tangled trace of shattered dreams
Her silver shawl trembled to the touch of nightfall’s breeze
The chill she thought yes that’s from where it came
Or was it just the calling of his name?

He thought he might go South come the winter
Leave the January river misting in the moonlight
Gliding past the crystal glitter banks of snow
And he’d surly miss this place they had made together
If only he had thought to tell her so
And a tear caught his eye at the call of a night bird’s cry
Too soft on nature’s where he placed the blame
Or was it when he heard the calling of his name?

A hush fell between them in the shadows
As the willows and the rushes hummed the river’s song
Remind of good times not so long ago
One last chance to find the words that might bring healing
They must have tried though who can ever know?
And he watched her turn away, silhouetted in the dusk
Now she’d go on and he would do the same

A rootsy sound that is a combination of Chicago folk and blues influences of the early years, then fused with the later inspirations from the Austin alt. country sound. When not playing Bruce can be found horseback somewhere in a Colorado pasture. ... more
